Personal Project: Bathroom Shelf

I. Intro

Date: August – September 2022

Since there were so many things near the sink in the bathroom, I decided to build a shelf and put everything on there. But the space is limited, and I couldn’t find any shelf that would fit at the corner of the basin. So I had to design one for myself.

II. Design

I measured the space at the corner. With the known dimensions, the CAD model was quickly made just under an hour.

Figure 1: assembly of the shelf.

III. Build

I was dealing with the problem of the 3D printer most of the time:

  • It stoped printing in the middle of nowhere.
  • Circle became oval.
  • Some places were not 100% filled.

These were the things I don’t know how to solve. When I was printing the first part, everything worked fine. It wasted my a lot of materials, moreover, an enormous of time. Waiting for days (because I couldn’t go check the printer every day), and the printer gave me bad news.

Figure 2 and 3: these were the acceptable parts, but still they looked bad.
Figure 4: it just stopped in the middle of nowhere.
Figure 5 and 6: the surface was not even completely filled.
Figure 7: the base shifted somehow.
Figure 10: it’s not even a circle.

Then I went to the 3D printing lab in the ME building, but nothing was helpful at all.

Eventually, after sacrificing a lot of material and time, the shelf was partially done. I only used 3 columns on each layer. It stood at least.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the picture. It was a gift to my friend.
